Mossops is a name synonymous with the tackle industry in South East Queensland.  From humble beginnings over 50 years ago on Cornwall St, in the Brisbane suburb of Annerley, barber Len Mossop had a passion for fishing.  Len particularly loved beach fishing and his enthusiasm was such that he started selling Alvey reels and beach rods out of his barbershop.

Over time the fishing tackle took over from the barbershop and Mossops Tackle Shop was born. Mossops became an icon tackle shop and one of the best-known brand names in the industry.  At its peak Mossops Tackle Shops operated 6 stores in SEQ.  As is the way in business the peaks and troughs can be much like the ocean seas we fish.  After a number of changes in ownership Mossops Tackle Shops is again a single store located not too far from those humble beginnings in Annerley.  

Mossops has recently seen another change in ownership and once again is riding the crest of a wave.  Now operated by proprietor Brad Smith and Steve McDonald the Woolloongabba store has been rejuvenated.  Like Len, both Brad and Steve have a passion for fishing and bring with them a vast knowledge of the sport.  With over 60 years fishing experience between them their knowledge base comes from a lifetime spent fishing having both been introduced to the sport by their fathers at an early age.  From fishing rivers for natives; game fishing the blue water currents; bread and butter species from the beach, rock and estuary; commercial line fishing for a living; chasing big barra or threadfin and tackling the bream and bass tournament scene with success, between them there’s not much that that they have not encountered.

In keeping with the Mossops tradition the shop is staffed by die-hard fishermen who are only too happy to share their knowledge with people who support the store.  The shop is well stocked with quality tackle to suit most fishing needs with products from all the major brand name suppliers.  Since taking over the range has expanded to include electric motors and marine electronics and more.  The staff at Mossops spend the time with you to ensure that you get the right gear for your fishing needs and that you are armed with the best knowledge to get the most from your fishing pursuits.  The store turns over a lot of bait, which ensures that you are getting the freshest and best.  Also, rod and reel repairs are all apart of the service.  With all this you may expect to pay a premium price, however, the store is competitively priced with second to none after sales service and advice.

“One of the great joys we get from the job is seeing a customers face on returning to the store after we have spent time with them helping them out” explains Brad.  “You can immediately tell that they have caught fish regardless if they were a beginner you have set on the right path or an experienced fisher who you have helped fine tune there tactics.  The grin from ear to ear is a dead give-away.”

Many of the customers today recall purchasing their first rod and Alvey reel all those years ago and still rely on Mossops for their fishing needs.  Still offering the same genuine old fashion service provided by Len all those years ago, the guys envisage the current generation of young anglers coming to the store in another 50 years with similar stories to tell.
